Comprehensively explain the nature (how it exists) and purpose of music videos.

Nature;
What TV channels exist in the UK or online streaming to broadcast music videos?

TV music channels have been around for about 30 years when the music channel MTV launched. MTV was the only music channel around so that is where all the music videos were aired for a while. In 1983 Michael Jacksons Thriller music video premiered on MTV for the first time. The thriller music video is 13.43 minutes long, this video was portrayed as a short film more than a music video. The release of the thriller video was massive as it had its own slot in the channel listings that night. MTV are known to show music videos of all genres and ages. They now have expanded into a website and an app for smart phones. Vevo is another popular music channel but this is online, it was founded in 2008. Vevo is linked to youtube, it is where all the official music videos from the artist come from. For example if you wanted to watch an official music video from an artist and there was loads of copies you would chose vevo because it would be the best quality as the others would be replica copies.
These are some more examples of music channels;
-Magic (TV)
-The Vault (TV)
-MTV base (TV)
-Dance nation
-MTV rocks (TV)
-MTV Trax (App)
-Smash hits (TV)
-Vevo (Online)
-Capital TV (Online/TV)

Music channels can be accessed in several ways, one way could be through a sky satellite system. Having access to sky on your TV allows you to have access to loads of channels these including all of the music channels that are on TV. Virgin Media is also something you can have on your TV and they also do broadband, Virgin Media operate through a fibrotic cable. To access channels, TV shows, box sets and films you can also have netflix and Amazon prime, this is where you can watch programs which also include the music channels. The difference between these four uses is two you can have your TV and the other two use the internet, the only way you would be able to access netflix and Amazon prime on your TV is if you have a smart TV where it uses the internet.

There are different music channels mainly to target at different audiences. For example they could target at different ages or they could target at people that enjoy different genres of music. For example Kerrang! plays rock music, Capital TV is charts and pop, the vault and magic play the older music, that is how the channels split between target audiences. There are more pop and chart channels than any other genre.
The music channels that appear online are Youtube, Vimeo and VEVO. Youtube is the most popular one as its free and easy to access, VEVO appears on youtube as it is home to all the official videos of artists as they are the real copy instead of copies which would be lower quality in all areas.
On the other hand there are also apps which you can use for music for example iTunes, Tubdiy, MTV Trax and Spotify. These are app which enable you to download songs and some let you download the music video along with them. Tubidy allows you to download the music for free but it transfers the music off of youtube the only negative with this app is that it doesn't allow you to download the videos from VEVO which are the official videos. You have the pay a fee to use MTV Trax, iTunes or Spotify for the privilege of downloading the music.

Music videos could be around for several reasons, for example it helps tell the story of the song because there is more meaning towards the music video as they could of actors or just the way they portray the video. Sometimes with music videos they can be longer than the song this is because the music stops and the actors say something or there is something important happening in the video. Most of the time the artist of the song will appear in the music video, there are two main types of music video these are, live and narrative. Live videos are where the artist or band are performing, narrative is when there is a story being told within a video. A narrative music video is usually used when there is more meaning towards the song. For example, James Arthur say you won't let go, the song is about love, and not wanting to lose that one special person. His music video is a narrative video, the actors portray the song better and it has more meaning towards it, because the video is in black and white shows that it is a deep meaning and it is upsetting as dark colours usually represent sadness.

Making a music video also increases sales which will then increase the profit the artist makes from it. If they have a music video it can be showed on music channels which will then boost the popularity of it. If they do not have a music video then music channels will be unable to show it. The artists of the song will also have a big view on the music video so it shows a lot about the person as they are choosing how it is portrayed to the audience. When a music video is made the popularity of the song will go up as it is getting played more. A lot of people speak about a music video so then people will go to watch it. For example the Elastic heart video from Sia made big news because it was a young girl dancing with Shia LaBeouf. Everyone was watching this video so it became more popular. The music video alone has now reached 764,047,987 views. Sia's music videos are very popular as she does not appear in them they are always dance videos which is different to most artists videos.

Mr Judge Feedback

Discussion On MTV origins has limitations as no dates are presented. Very general discussion on MTV now in terms of website now etc. Chose/choose spelt wrong. No elaboration or detail on the rest of the channels just a list. Thriller video embedded shows good skill. Grammar, sentence structures are limited. “Virgin Media is also something you can have on your TV and they also do broadband” a case in point. Good research on alternative means of watching and downloading videos on Tubdiy. Good awareness of different types of music video although I would add Artistic and Avant Garde music videos. Good research on Sia and her success as a contemporary artist. You have explained the purpose of music videos with some detailed illustrative examples, good use of terminology M1

JAMES ARTHUR SAY YOU WONT LET GO
[INTRO] [VERSE] (0:00-0:30)
I met you in the dark
You lit me up
You made me feel as though
I was enough
We danced the night away
We drank too much
I held your hair back when
You were throwing up

[PRE-CHORUS] (0:30-0:50)
Then you smiled over your shoulder
For a minute, I was stone cold sober
I pulled you closer to my chest
And you asked me to stay over
I said, I already told ya
I think that you should get some rest

[CHORUS] (0:50-1:21)
I knew I loved you then
But you'd never know
Cause I played it cool when
I was scared of letting go
I know I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you
Until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

[VERSE] (1:21-1:41)
I wake you up with some breakfast in bed
I'll bring you coffee
With a kiss on your head
And I'll take the kids to school
Wave them goodbye
And I'll thank my lucky stars for that night

[PRE-CHORUS] (1:41-2:01)
When you looked over your shoulder
For a minute, I forget that I'm older
I wanna dance with you right now, oh
And you look as beautiful as ever
And I swear that everyday you'll get better
You make me feel this way somehow

[CHORUS] (2:01-2:31)
I'm so in love with you
And I hope you know
Darling your love is more than
Worth its weight in gold
We've come so far my dear
Look how we've grown
And I wanna stay with you
Until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

[BRIDGE] (2:31-2:42)
I wanna live with you
Even when we're ghosts
Cause you were always there for me
When I needed you most

[CHORUS] (2:42-3:12)
I'm gonna love you till
My lungs give out
I promise till death we part
Like in our vows
So I wrote this song for you
Now everybody knows
That it's just you and me
Until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

[OUTRO] (3:12-3:30)
Just say you won't let go

Oh, just say you won't let go
